Incheon Airport to Seoul by AREX: Express vs All-Stop, Fares and Last Trains

Two trains, and which one you want

You are down in the transport centre with your bags and there are two trains. One is faster; the other is much cheaper.

The Express (직통열차, jiktong yeolcha) runs Seoul Station to Incheon Airport Terminal 1 in 43 minutes and to Terminal 2 in 51 minutes, at ₩13,000 for an adult one way. The all-stop train (일반열차, ilban yeolcha) takes 59 minutes to Terminal 1 and 66 minutes to Terminal 2, at ₩4,750 and ₩5,350 — and the official page warns that some services run 2 to 6 minutes longer (「일부 열차는 2~6분정도 추가소요」).

So the Express saves 16 minutes to Terminal 1 and costs ₩8,250 more.

Two other differences matter more than the time. The Express needs a ticket bought before you board; a transit card tap does not work on it. And it runs 26 times a day in each direction, against roughly 134 to 136 all-stop through-trains. If you walk down to the platform without having checked a timetable, the all-stop train is the one that will be there.

The ₩13,000 is itself a discount. The published regular fare (정상운임) is ₩18,500 from Seoul Station to Terminal 1 and ₩19,100 to Terminal 2; ₩13,000 is what is actually charged. All figures here are as of August 2026 — AREX does not label its fares by year.

There is no foreigner discount on the Express

Worth stating plainly, because the opposite is widely repeated. The word for foreigner (외국인) does not appear at all on the official Express fare page.

The discount table there holds exactly five categories: children (어린이), seniors (경로), people with disabilities (장애인), persons of national merit (국가유공자) and partner discounts (제휴할인), with the partner-discount entry marked as varying by partner (제휴사별 상이) and online only (온라인 전용). A footnote says discounts do not stack (「할인은 중복 적용되지 않습니다」).

A child aged 6 to under 13 pays ₩9,500, and the same ₩9,500 applies to seniors (경로), people with disabilities (장애인) and persons of national merit (국가유공자). Read the conditions before you count on any of them. The senior discount is limited to Korean nationals aged 65 and over, with ID required (「만 65세 이상 내국인」) — the word for Korean nationals (내국인) appears exactly once on that page, in the senior row. The disability and national-merit discounts require a disability registration card (장애인등록증) or a certificate of national merit (국가유공자 증명서).

As an adult foreign visitor, your Express fare is ₩13,000.

You have to buy a ticket. A card tap is not enough.

The official notice says the Express runs non-stop between Seoul Station and Incheon Airport, and you must purchase a ticket separately before boarding (「직통열차는 서울역-인천공항을 무정차 운행하며 탑승 전 승차권을 별도로 구매하셔야 합니다.」).

This is the single most useful thing to know before you arrive. A T-money-type transit card works on the all-stop train and needs no separate ticket. On the Express it does not substitute for one, and the passenger tariff (Article 7(1)5) lets staff refuse carriage to anyone who has not bought an Express ticket by five minutes before departure.

Tickets are sold at the Express Train Customer Information Center (직통열차 고객안내센터) in three places: Seoul Station, basement level 2; Incheon Airport Terminal 1, basement level 1 of the transportation centre; Incheon Airport Terminal 2, basement level 1 of the transportation centre.

One piece of advice, since the tariff backs it: if you are taking the Express, buy the ticket before you go down to the platform. The whole point of it is the 16 minutes, and walking back up to a ticket counter spends them.

First and last trains, in both directions

From Seoul Station toward the airport, the Express runs first at 06:00 and last at 23:00. Toward Seoul it leaves Terminal 1 first at 05:24 and last at 22:48, and Terminal 2 at 05:16 and 22:40. Those are departure times, not Seoul arrival times.

The all-stop train runs later at both ends — but only if you catch one that goes the whole way. That is the next section, and it is the part that strands people.

The Express weekday (평일) and holiday (휴일) timetables are byte-identical: the same 26 departures at the same times. There is no separate weekend or holiday Express schedule.

Gaps between Express trains have a median of 40 minutes, ranging 25 to 65 minutes going airport to Seoul and 34 to 55 minutes going Seoul to airport. Look up the departure you want rather than turning up for it.

Terminal 1 comes before Terminal 2

Coming from Seoul, the train reaches Terminal 1 first; Terminal 2 is the end of the line. The official route follows that order (「직통열차 노선 서울역 > 인천공항1터미널 > 인천공항2터미널」), and the timetable proves it: southbound, the Terminal 1 arrival always precedes the Terminal 2 arrival by 8 minutes; northbound, the Terminal 2 departure always precedes the Terminal 1 departure by 8 minutes.

Check which terminal your airline uses before you board.

The all-stop train: cheaper, slower, far more frequent

Adult fares come from a matrix headed adult, prepaid or postpaid transit card basis (「어른, 선후불 교통카드 기준」). Seoul Station to Terminal 1 is ₩4,750 and to Terminal 2 ₩5,350. From Hongik Univ. (홍대입구) and from Gongdeok (공덕) the fares are identical to each other: ₩4,650 to Terminal 1 and ₩5,250 to Terminal 2. Between the two terminals it is ₩1,200.

Buy a single-use card instead of tapping a transit card and an adult pays ₩100 more, plus a ₩500 deposit that comes back at your destination station from a deposit refund machine.

Children aged 6 to under 13 pay a ₩550 base fare plus 50% of the adult distance charge. Young people aged 13 to 18 pay a ₩900 base fare plus 80% of it, a 20% discount.

Frequency is where this train wins. On a weekday there are 134 through-trains from Seoul to Terminal 2 and 136 from each airport terminal to Seoul, at a median interval of 8 minutes and an overall range of 3 to 20 minutes. Between 06:00 and 22:00 the gaps run 4 to 13 minutes from Seoul and 3 to 12 minutes from the terminals. After 22:00 they stretch to 8 to 16 minutes from Seoul, and up to 19 minutes from the airport terminals.

The line has 14 stations, in this order: Seoul Station, Gongdeok, Hongik Univ., Digital Media City, Magongnaru, Gimpo Int'l Airport, Gyeyang, Geomam, Cheongna Int'l City, Yeongjong, Unseo, Airport Cargo Terminal, ICN Terminal 1, ICN Terminal 2.

The last all-stop train trap

Not every all-stop train runs the whole line, and the last one on the board does not.

The last through-trains on a weekday: from Seoul Station to Terminal 2, 23:40, with the first at 05:20. Toward Seoul, 23:38 from Terminal 1 (first 05:14) and 23:32 from Terminal 2 (first 05:08).

Why not the times printed at the bottom of the board? Because on weekdays exactly 48 departures from Seoul Station terminate at Geomam (검암) without reaching the airport — including the very last departure of the day, at 24:00. In the other direction there is one such departure from each airport station, 23:56 from Terminal 1 and 23:50 from Terminal 2, terminating at Digital Media City (디지털미디어시티) and never reaching Seoul Station.

The defence is simple. Read the destination on the platform indicator, not just the departure time.

Which train for where you are going

The Express runs only as far as Seoul Station. If Seoul Station is your destination, that is the end of it — and it is where the City Airport Terminal is. Anywhere else means changing there.

Seoul Station's official AREX interchanges are KTX, Line 1, Line 4 and the Gyeongui Line (경의선). Myeongdong Station is on Seoul Subway Line 4 and Gangnam Station is on Line 2, per the Seoul Metropolitan Government, so Myeongdong is a single Line 4 ride from the Express terminus.

For Hongdae, take the all-stop train instead. It calls at Hongik Univ. Station directly, at ₩4,650, with no interchange at all.

The all-stop line's other official interchanges: Gongdeok (공덕), with Lines 5 and 6 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line (경의중앙선); Hongik Univ. (홍대입구), with Line 2 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line (경의중앙선); Digital Media City (디지털미디어시티), with Line 6 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line (경의중앙선); Magongnaru (마곡나루), with Line 9; Gimpo Int'l Airport (김포공항), with Lines 5 and 9, the Gimpo Goldline (김포골드라인) and the Seohae Line (서해선); Gyeyang (계양), with Incheon Line 1; Geomam (검암), with Incheon Line 2.

If your arrival time puts the last train in doubt, read the bus and taxi fares two sections down before you commit to a plan.

If you have missed the last train

The last Express leaves Terminal 1 at 22:48, and the last all-stop through-train to Seoul Station at 23:38. After that, and whenever the train does not go where you are going, the road options are the airport limousine bus and a taxi.

Limousine bus 6015 to Myeongdong runs first at 05:39 from Terminal 1 and 05:19 from Terminal 2, last at 23:19 and 22:59. Route 6703 to Gangnam and COEX runs first at 06:15 and 05:55, last at 22:55 and 22:35. Night routes N6000 and N6002 are ₩17,000; N6701 and N6703 are ₩18,000.

Taxis are metered: a ₩4,800 base fare for a regular taxi (일반택시) in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi, covering the first 1.6 km and then ₩100 per 131 m; or ₩7,000 for a deluxe taxi (모범택시) or nine-seat large taxi (대형택시), covering the first 3 km and then ₩200 per 151 m. Seoul and Incheon taxis add 40% between 23:00 and 02:00, and 20% for 22:00–23:00 and 02:00–04:00. No official source publishes a total metered fare from the airport to central Seoul, so treat any figure quoted at you as a guess.

The officially designated International Taxi does publish flat fares, and that is the number to plan against.

The Seoul Station City Airport Terminal

On basement level 2 of AREX Seoul Station, the City Airport Terminal (도심공항터미널) handles check-in (탑승수속), baggage drop (수하물 위탁) and immigration (출국심사) for same-day international departures from Incheon Airport. You then use the dedicated departure lane on level 3 of the airport.

Eligibility (이용대상) is limited to Express ticket holders (「직통열차 승차권 구매 고객」), and you get in by scanning the QR code on your Express ticket at the terminal gate.

Hours: check-in 05:20 to 19:00, with reception closing at 18:50; immigration 05:30 to 19:00. Check-in has to be finished 3 hours before departure for a Terminal 1 flight and 3 hours 20 minutes before for Terminal 2. The official worked example: for a 17:00 flight, check in by 14:00 for Terminal 1, or 13:40 for Terminal 2.

Not covered: buying air tickets, and checking sports equipment that needs careful handling, musical instruments, or oversized baggage over 150 cm in length. Oversized means 45 cm × 90 cm × 60 cm or larger, or 50 kg or more. Airline coverage varies, and the page tells you to confirm with your airline in advance (「사전에 반드시 해당 항공사에 확인」). The service covers all routes except those to the Americas, Guam and Saipan included.

Luggage rules on AREX

The passenger tariff (여객운송약관, 2026.06 edition) sets the limits in Article 50(1): 「중량이 32kg 이상 또는 가로·세로·높이의 합이 158cm 이상되는 물품을 휴대하고 승차할 수 없으며, 1인당 2개를 초과할 수 없습니다.」 Each item must be under 32 kg and under 158 cm in combined length, width and height — and you may carry at most 2 pieces in total. The two-piece cap applies to baggage generally, not only to oversized items.

Article 50(2) lists the exceptions: sports and recreation equipment in a case under 32 kg with combined dimensions within 2 m; wheelchairs, electric ones included, and strollers in use; folded folding bicycles; folded personal mobility devices within 2 m combined; and — the clause that matters most to travellers — 「당일 항공기 이용객으로서 직원이 타 여객에 불편이 없다고 판단하여 휴대승차를 승인한 물품」, items approved by staff for a same-day air passenger where other passengers are not inconvenienced.

Article 49 prohibits weapons, explosives, hazardous chemicals and flammable materials; offensive or foul-smelling food; balloon-type objects; and animals, except pets fully enclosed in a carrier out of sight and guide dogs accompanying a disabled person, a trainer or a training volunteer.

One clause is new, in force since 15 June 2026 (Art. 49(1)5): 「리튬배터리로 구동되는 일체의 탈것(교통약자용 제외) 및 대용량 리튬배터리(160Wh 초과)」 — any lithium-battery-powered vehicle, with mobility aids for the transport-vulnerable (교통약자용) excepted, and large-capacity lithium batteries over 160Wh. If you are travelling with an e-scooter, an e-bike or a big power bank, read that one twice.
